restaurant reviews for vegans -
Pokez
947 E St, San Diego
(619) 702-7160
M-F 10 am - 9 pm;
Sa-Su 9 am - 7 pm (or maybe later)
Laurel,
Harper and I went out for Mexican food at Pokez (pronounced
like Pokey's) because they have a wide array of vegan options.
The decor is slightly political punk, with Pancho Villa and
United Farmworkers posters among others. The service is laid-back,
which I happen to like. You'll find your usual punky-hip crowd,
but not entirely so, and we were able to bring a 4-month-old
baby there with no problem. I got the vegan chorizo burrito
and it was yum-yum-good! Also, I'm a sucker for Mexican cabbage
salad, and this one is very chunky but delicious. I want to
eat here every time I come to San Diego from now on.

christine
wong yap - Christine is a
rad and inspiring Oakland artist who we can't say enough good
things about. Or more formally, "Christine Wong is an artist,
illustrator, designer and educator with a broad background
in print communications in the non-profit sector. She has
developed a wide range of print collateral and publications
for community organizers, youth groups and educators." Another
great thing about Christine's website is that it includes
tips for individuals and non-profit organizations on how to
work with a designer.
all
this is mine - Sugene does a great zine called
All This Is Mine here in the East Bay, and each issue
is very crafty. The latest one is chock-full of instructions
on how to do crafty things yourself and even includes materials
to get you started. As if that wasn't enough, she makes bags
and cards and handmade soaps. One of my favorite t-shirts
is her "I (heart) tea" shirt. Buy one, and then
you and I can be twins.
johnny brewton - Johnny
is the artist/designer who has brought the world X-Ray
Magazine over the past several years. He has also published
many poetry chapbooks and broadsides, some of which were letterpress
printed by yours truly. Check out his new projects, Broadside
of the Month Club and Bagazine.
booklyn - This
educational, non-profit collective based in Brooklyn, New
York, assists book artists via distribution and exhibition,
and provides educational resources about contemporary book
arts to curators, educators, and librarians who serve the
general public. They are also responsible for the hardcover
volume sets of Ker-bloom!
iprc - The
Independent Publishing Resource Center is a zine-maker's dream
hub in Portland, Oregon, dedicated to encouraging the growth
of a visual and literary publishing community by offering
a space to gather and exchange information and ideas, as well
as to produce work.
verdant
press - Jason Davis prints
broadsides, chapbooks, postcards, and calendars. And he's
a super nice guy.
AAPA
- The American Amateur Press
Association is a nation-wide non-profit organization of amateur
journalists founded in 1936. The website contains resources
for amateur publishers as well as letterpress printers. Answers
to many questions about letterpress printing can be found
here.
Whoop!
Distro - If you don't get your Slingshot Organizers
directly from the Slingshot collective or at a local
independent retailer, this is the best place to get one (or
three or six) on line. If you don't know what a Slingshot
Organizer is, you should. You can also buy back issues
of Ker-bloom! there.
Etsy
- I sell some limited quantity cards and zines on this venue
for makers of handmade crafts. There are thousands of handmade
crafts for sale on this site by the independent craftspeople
that make them. Check out my
Etsy store to see some items that I may not have on my
regular online store, either because they are too new or I
only made a few of them.
poopy's
santa - When I'm feeling
kind of low, I check out this dancing Santa animation from
my college pal Poopy Lickles' website. (Oh, and if you want
a fun party trick, get everyone at the party to dance along.)
Ppo
Ppo Ppo - This is a little quicktime video done
by some teenagers in Korea who go by the moniker "The
Choon Brothers." They are lipsynching a theme song to
a popular children's show whose title means "Kiss Kiss
Kiss." Maybe it's only funny if you speak some Korean.
It's a pretty silly song.
